Dr. Chérif Matta, B.Pharm.Sci. (Alexandria University), Dipl. (Sadat Academy), PhD (McMaster University), HDR (Université de Lorraine), FRSA, FRSB, FInstP, FRSC, FAAS, FAAAS, is Professor and Chair/Head of the Department of Chemistry & Physics at Mount Saint Vincent University and an Adjunct (Honorary) Professor at Dalhousie, Laval, and Saint Mary’s Universities (all in Canada), and holds frequent Visiting Professorships at Zewail City for Science and Technology (Egypt). After receiving his doctorate from McMaster under Professor Richard F. W. Bader, Matta has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto (with Nobel Laureate Professor John C. Polanyi) and an Izaak W. Killam Postdoctoral Fellow at Dalhousie University (with Professor Russell J. Boyd). Chérif Matta’s research ranges from theoretical and computational chemistry to mitochondrial biophysics. He has introduced with Dr. Ron Cook and Prof. Paul W. Ayers electron Localization-Delocalization Matrices (LDMs) as predictive descriptors in materials and bio-pharmacological research. He discovered an unusual role of the enzyme ATP synthase and is a co-discoverer of the Hydrogen-Hydrogen bonding interaction. Matta has given more than 250 lectures in over 30 countries and has ca. 200 publications including four books cited approx. 9000 times. Matta has been named “Distinguished Visiting Professor” by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education 2022-2023, was the 2021–2022 “Science Atlantic Speaker of the Year”, has been awarded Mount Saint Vincent University’s Award for Research Excellence (2017), the Lady Davis Fellowship (2016-2017), the NSERC-Acfas “Preuve par l’image” Prize for 2016, the Molecular Graphics and Molecular Simulation Society Silver Jubilee Prize for 2009, the John C. Polanyi Prize in Chemistry for 2004, and the Izaak Walton Killam Fellowship in 2002–2004. Prof. Matta is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, of the African Academy of Sciences, of the Royal Society of Chemistry, of the Institute of Physics, of the Royal Society of Biology, and of the Royal Society of the Arts. He has served as Chair/Head of the Interdisciplinary Adjudication Committee of the Canada Research Chairs Programme of the Tri-Council of Canada and is currently serving as Director of Accreditation & Member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Society for Chemistry. He an elected Member of the Commission for Quantum Crystallography of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) and a Member of the Canadian National Committee for Crystallography (CNCC).

Dra. Santos Adriana Martel

Doctora en Ciencia de Materiales egresada del Centro de Investigación en Materiales Avanzados en Chihuahua, Chihuahua con apoyo del CONACyT. Cuenta con Diplomado en Bioética por la Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas y la Academia Nacional Mexicana de Bioética.

Actualmente, se desempeña como profesora de tiempo completo en la Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez y es Coordinadora de Ingeniería en Materiales. Se ha enfocado en investigación de biomateriales para la regeneración de hueso y piel, y en la liberación controlada de fármacos. Cuenta con 30 artículos en publicaciones internacionales, 10 memorias in extenso, 2 capítulos de libro, 1 libro, 11 reportes técnicos, 1 solicitud de patente con examen de forma relacionado con un biomaterial regenerador de piel para el tratamiento de heridas, responsable y/o participante en 17 proyectos de investigación, la mayoría con financiamiento externo y miembro del Cuerpo Académico de Ingeniería Tisular y Medicina Regenerativa de la UACJ. De acuerdo con Google Scholar, cuenta con 670 citas a sus publicaciones, y tiene un h-index de 14 y un i10-index de 23.

Dentro de la formación de recursos humanos, ha sido directora de dos tesis de doctorado, 10 tesis de maestría, y 54 estudiantes de licenciatura. Ha impartido más de 64 presentaciones en congresos internacionales, que incluyen ponencias y presentaciones de póster científicos. Fue miembro del Consejo Editorial de la revista internacional Journal of Materials Sciences and Applications desde diciembre de 2014 hasta diciembre de 2016, miembro del Consejo Editorial de la revista internacional American Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering desde diciembre de 2014 hasta diciembre de 2016 y la revista Culcyt de la UACJ en 2021. Ha participado como evaluadora de las siguientes publicaciones de calidad internacional, tales como la Revista Mexicana de Ingeniería Biomédica, Carbohydrate Polymers, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Journal of Materials Sciences and Applications Revista Ion, Journal of Cellular Plastics, Celullar Polymers, Materials Science and Engineering C, Materials Letters, Internacional Journal of Carbohydrate Chemistry, Mutis, Biomacromolecule, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, Revista Espacio I+D, International Journal of Nanomedicine, Lampsakos, Bitácora Urbano Territorial, Journal of Applied Biomaterials and Functional Materials y Heliyon. Derivado de estas participaciones ha recibido reconocimientos de la Editorial Elsevier en Holanda, por sus contribuciones sobresalientes como revisor en la revista Carbohydrate Polymers, Materials Science and Engineering C y Journal of Alloys and Compounds 2015 .

Del mismo modo, ha dedicado gran parte de su trayectoria profesional a la difusión científica, destacando su participación como Delegada Estatal de la Olimpiada Mexicana de Física en Chihuahua de 2001 a 2010 y desde 2014 a la fecha, organizada por la Sociedad Mexicana de Física. Coordinadora de los Concursos Estatales de Talentos de Física, y Coordinadora de la Primera Olimpiada Mesoamericana de Física en conjunto el Centro Mesoamericano de Fisica Teórica, el CONACyT, el Consejo Superior Universitario Centroamericano y el Centro Internacional de Física Teórica.

Ha sido distinguida con el Premio Estatal en Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación 2015 en la Categoría de Ciencia Área Ingeniería, Industrial y Ciencias Físico-Matemáticas, en la selección de Profesores que Dejan Huella, realizada en el 75 aniversario del Tecnológico de Monterrey, por la Asociación EXATEC en 2018.
